🌱 How to Sow Lithops Seeds Successfully
Get your living stones off to the best start!
1. Choose the Right Pot
Use shallow pots about 60–80 mm deep, and make sure they have drainage holes. Lithops hate soggy soil—good drainage is essential to avoid rot.
2. Prepare the Ideal Growing Mix
Lithops thrive in porous soil. Avoid fine or builder’s sand, which can retain too much moisture.
Recommended mix:
- 2/3 cactus potting mix
- 1/3 coarse propagation sand or fine pumice
Fill your pot to 5 mm below the rim, then add a thin top layer of fine pumice or propagation sand. This supports seedlings and distributes moisture evenly.
3. Sow the Seeds
Scatter Lithops seeds thinly across the surface.
Do not cover them with soil—they need light to germinate.
4. Mist Gently and Cover
Use a fine mister to moisten the surface without disturbing the seeds.
Lithops seeds may carry natural germination inhibitors—mist to help wash these away.
Cover the pot with clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome to keep conditions humid until sprouting occurs.
5. Provide Light & Warmth
Place the pot in a bright, indirect light spot.
Maintain a steady temperature of 15–20°C. Avoid strong sun or cold drafts.
6. Wait Patiently for Germination
Germination usually begins within 7–10 days, though it can sometimes take longer.
Don’t worry—Lithops seeds are long-lived and slow to start, but they’re worth the wait!
