Indian Jujube – Ber
Ziziphus mauritiana
A hardy deciduous fruit tree also known as Chinese apple or Ber, valued for its ability to thrive in poor soils and withstand extreme weather. Grows 4.5–10.5 m tall with thorny branches and small, glossy oval leaves.
In spring, it produces small yellow flowers followed by sweet, apple-like fruit in autumn. The fruit can be eaten fresh, dried, or used in baking, teas, and preserves. A richly flavoured, versatile crop with excellent drought tolerance and wide culinary appeal.
Growing Instructions:
Carefully crack or nick seeds, then soak in warm water for 48 hours. Cold stratify for 60 days in the fridge. Plant in seed mix, keep moist and warm.
Gibberellic acid can assist with breaking dormancy.
⚠️ Recommended for experienced growers — germination can be slow and unpredictable, sometimes taking up to 12 months.
