Tamarind Tree
Tamarindus indica
A beautiful, large tropical tree native to Africa, prized for its graceful foliage and edible pods. The curved, 10–20 cm long fruit contains several large seeds surrounded by sticky, paste-like pulp with a distinctive sweet-sour flavour. Commonly used in chutneys, sauces, drinks, and traditional medicine.
Tamarind is frost-tender when young but can tolerate temperatures down to –2 °C once established. Trees are self-fertile and typically begin fruiting 6–8 years from seed.
Growing Instructions
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Plant 2–2.5 cm deep in a quality seed mix. Keep at 25–30 °C. Germination occurs in 2–6 weeks. Stratification is not required. Scarification (lightly nicking or sanding the seed coat) may improve germination rates but is optional. Protect seedlings from frost.
