When to Plant Chilli & Tomato Seedlings Outdoors in New Zealand
Knowing when to plant chilli and tomato seedlings outdoors can make a big difference to how quickly they establish and how well they crop.
Chillies and tomatoes are warm-season plants. They love plenty of sunshine, warm soil and mild nights, but they can struggle if planted outdoors while conditions are still too cold.

βοΈ Is your garden ready?
Before planting your seedlings outdoors, check that:
- Frost risk has largely passed
- The soil is warming and isn't cold or waterlogged
- Nights are becoming milder
- Your seedlings have been hardened off
- They receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight
- You have frost protection available if needed
πΆοΈ Chillies need extra warmth
Chillies generally need even more warmth than tomatoes. They can be slow to get going if planted outdoors too early, particularly when the soil is still cool and nights are cold.
If you're unsure whether conditions are warm enough, it is usually better to wait a little longer rather than planting too early.

For gardeners around Blenheim and Marlborough, Labour Day weekend has traditionally been a popular time to plant out frost-tender vegetables such as tomatoes and chillies.
Warm, sheltered gardens may be ready around Labour Weekend, while frost-prone areas are often better waiting until late October or early November.
A few extra days of warmth can make a big difference to young plants, especially chillies.
πΏ Don't rush your seedlings outdoors
If your seedlings have been growing indoors, in a greenhouse or somewhere protected, remember to harden them off before planting them permanently outdoors.
Gradually expose them to outdoor conditions over several days so they can adjust to stronger sunlight, wind and cooler temperatures.
If a late frost is forecast, protect your plants or bring them back under cover if possible.
