Caper
Capparis spinosa
Renowned for its edible flower buds, known as capers, which are pickled and used to add a tangy, savoury kick to a wide range of dishes. These flavourful buds enhance salads, pasta, sauces, and more. Historically valued for their medicinal properties, capers bring a unique zest to both modern and traditional recipes. The plant itself is a low-growing, drought-tolerant perennial, ideal for rock gardens, walls, and sunny, well-drained locations.
Growing Instructions
Cold stratify seeds in the fridge for 4-10 weeks, soak in warm water overnight, then scarify the seed husk gently with sandpaper. Plant in moist cactus mix, and keep warm and consistently moist. A heat pad can help maintain ideal conditions.
Gibberellic acid may assist with breaking dormancy.
⚠️ Recommended for advanced growers:
Germination is slow and unpredictable, often taking 6 months to 2 years. Patience is essential.
