Carob Tree
Ceratonia siliqua
A large evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean, prized for its long, leathery seed pods filled with sweet, edible pulp. Often used as a chocolate substitute, carob is a traditional ingredient in baking, confections, and natural sweeteners. Its dense canopy and drought tolerance also make it useful as a hardy shade tree in dry climates.
PLANT CARE
- Light: Full sun
- Water: Low once established; water regularly while young
- Humidity: Tolerates dry air
- Considerations: Frost-tender when young; protect below –6°C. Prefers free-draining soil. Generally self-fertile but may benefit from a second tree for improved yield. May take 6–8 years to fruit from seed.
Grown as seedling in a 10 cm pot (similar to one in photo).Â
