New Zealand Spinach
New Zealand Spinach is a heat-tolerant leafy green that thrives through summer when true spinach struggles and bolts, producing fleshy, triangular leaves with a mild, slightly salty flavour. Not a true spinach but an excellent substitute, particularly for cooking where its texture softens beautifully when steamed, sautéed, or blanched. A native New Zealand plant with genuine practical value in the summer kitchen garden.
Growing as a sprawling, low-growing plant, New Zealand Spinach can be harvested continuously once established, making it one of the most productive and reliable summer greens available. Pinching the tips regularly encourages branching and a fuller, more generous plant. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and performs consistently across a wide range of New Zealand growing conditions.
