Turmeric
Curcuma longa
A tropical root crop in the ginger family, turmeric is prized for its vibrant golden rhizomes used in cooking, dyeing, and traditional medicine. The dried, ground rhizomes add a warm, earthy flavour to curries and golden milk. The large, lush leaves are also edible and can be used to wrap and steam food for a mild, aromatic infusion.
Grow in rich, free-draining soil with part shade and consistent moisture. Turmeric thrives in warm, humid conditions and is frost-sensitive—ideal for pots, greenhouses, or sheltered garden beds. Harvest rhizomes 8–10 months after planting, once foliage yellows and begins to die back.
