Wasabi (Wasabia japonica) is a shade-loving, cool-climate perennial grown for its pungent, aromatic rhizomes, traditionally used to make fresh wasabi paste. The entire plant is edible, including the leaves and stems, which have a milder wasabi flavour and can be used in salads or pickled.
Thrives in consistently cool, damp conditions with filtered light or partial to full shade. Prefers rich, moist, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Wasabi does best in areas with high humidity and mild summers—ideal for shaded patios, greenhouses, or sheltered garden beds.
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting the roots dry out. Plants are slow-growing and typically take 18–24 months to form harvestable rhizomes. Protect from slugs and snails.
Sold in a 10 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for containers or ground planting in frost-free areas with protection from strong wind and direct summer sun.
