Wasabi
Wasabia japonica
Wasabia japonica is a shade-loving, cool-climate perennial grown for its pungent, aromatic rhizomes ā the source of traditional fresh wasabi paste. Slow-growing and deeply rewarding, it is one of the most prized and challenging crops in the culinary world, and growing your own is a genuinely special experience. The entire plant is edible; the leaves and stems carry a milder wasabi flavour and can be used fresh in salads or pickled.
Wasabi thrives in consistently cool, damp conditions with filtered light or partial to full shade, and prefers rich, moist, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. It does best in areas with mild summers and reliable moisture ā ideal for shaded patios, greenhouses, or sheltered garden beds. Plants typically take 18ā24 months to form harvestable rhizomes, but the wait is well worth it.
PLANT CARE
⢠Light: Partial to full shade; avoid direct summer sun which will stress the plant
- Water: Keep soil evenly and consistently moist; never allow roots to dry out; avoid waterlogging
- Humidity: High humidity preferred; thrives in cool, damp conditions
- Considerations: Plant in rich, moist, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter, such as our specifically designed blend for aroids and houseplants. Protect from slugs and snails.
