Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a cold-sensitive perennial herb long valued in traditional medicine for its roots, which are dried and powdered for use in herbal preparations, and its ripe red berries, which are used as a rennet substitute in cheese making. A genuinely versatile and culturally significant plant, it brings both medicinal and culinary interest to the home garden. Its silvery-green foliage and small berries make it an attractive addition to a herb bed or container.

Cultivated in a similar way to Cape Gooseberry, Ashwagandha requires warmth for germination and is best started in late spring once temperatures have settled. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, performing best in warm New Zealand regions where it can establish before the cooler months arrive.
