Asparagus - Pacific Purple

Asparagus officinalis

A striking purple asparagus variety known for its sweet, tender spears and vibrant colour. Popular worldwide for fresh eating, especially raw or lightly cooked—though colour fades with prolonged heat. The spears are thicker, less fibrous, and have a milder flavour than green types. An excellent choice for gourmet gardens and colourful harvests.

Growing Instructions

Plant asparagus crowns in early spring once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny, sheltered location with free-draining sandy loam enriched with compost. Prepare rows 15–20 cm deep and 1 m apart. Mix in lime and superphosphate to raise pH and support early growth.

Place crowns 30–40 cm apart in the row with buds pointing upward. Cover with 5 cm of loose soil, then gradually add more soil through summer and autumn as spears grow.

Keep soil moist but not waterlogged and free of weeds throughout the season. Do not harvest in the first year—allow ferns to grow to feed the crowns. Remove dead ferns in late autumn after they fully brown.

Harvest begins in the second year if spear thickness reaches 15 mm. Expect a productive 6–8 week harvest window in subsequent seasons.
