Banana – Dwarf Cavendish
Musa acuminata
Dwarf Cavendish is a compact banana variety ideal for smaller spaces and container growing. It reaches an average height of 1.8 m, making it perfect for urban backyards, greenhouses, or polytunnels. Known for its sweet, delicious fruit, this variety thrives in warm, frost-free areas and is widely grown throughout New Zealand.
Growing in pots is recommended, as it naturally limits plant size and helps prevent root rot in wet winter soils. Ensure a free-draining soil mix to avoid soggy roots and protect from frost when young. Thrives with regular feeding—loves fertilisers such as our Ocean Grow Seaweed Boost.
PLANT CARE
- Light: Full sun or bright, filtered light
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist during the growing season; reduce in winter
- Soil: Free-draining mix with added organic matter
- Considerations: Great for pots. Protect from frost and cold winds. Feed during spring and summer for vigorous growth and fruiting.
Sold in a 15 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for containers or sheltered garden beds in frost-free areas.
