Blue Wild Indigo, also known as Blue False Indigo, is a striking native North American perennial from the bean family, producing tall, upright spikes of vivid indigo-blue, lupine-like flowers from late spring to early summer. Dense, shrubby clumps of bluish-green trifoliate leaves give way to ornamental charcoal-black seed pods that rattle when dry, adding interest well into winter. A long-lived, low-maintenance perennial that attracts butterflies and bees and fixes nitrogen in the soil, making it as beneficial as it is beautiful.

Drought tolerant and adaptable to a wide range of soils once established, Blue Wild Indigo suits borders, cottage gardens, and naturalized plantings. It develops a deep taproot and is best left undisturbed once planted. Patience is required — plants grown from seed take three to four years to reach flowering maturity, but once established they can persist for decades with virtually no attention.
