Eggplant - Black Beauty
Solanum melongena
Eggplant 'Black Beauty' is a classic American heirloom introduced in 1902 and one of the most widely grown and trusted eggplant varieties in the world. It produces large, oval, deep purple-black glossy fruit with tender, creamy flesh and a mild, rich flavour that is excellent in ratatouille, eggplant parmigiana, roasting, grilling, and Mediterranean-style cooking. A prolific and reliable variety that has remained the benchmark for large eggplants for over a century.
Bushy and spreading in habit, 'Black Beauty' thrives in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Stake plants early to support the weight of the heavy crop. Harvest while skin is still glossy and firm for the best flavour and texture, as overripe fruit can become bitter.
