Shiso - Green (Perilla)

Shiso 'Green', also known as perilla, is a versatile and aromatic annual herb from the mint family with a long history of culinary and medicinal use across Asian traditions. The bright green, slightly ruffled leaves deliver a distinctive flavour combining fresh mint and basil with subtle anise notes, widely used in Japanese cuisine for sushi, salads, tempura, and as a fresh garnish. A herb with genuine cultural heritage and outstanding flavour that is increasingly popular in New Zealand home gardens.

Frost-sensitive and warmth-loving, 'Green' shiso prefers full sun and well-drained soil with regular watering, avoiding waterlogging at all times. Seeds can be slow to germinate and require light, so surface sow and keep consistently moist. Soaking seeds for 24 hours before sowing can help improve germination rates and speed up establishment.
