Tropical shrub cultivated for its fragrant flowers and leaves, dried and ground into a dye used for skin art, hair colouring, and fabric staining. Leaves contain lawsone, a natural pigment that produces a reddish-orange colour. Plants grow as dense, multi-branched shrubs with glossy green leaves and clusters of cream to pink flowers. Prefers hot, sunny conditions and thrives in well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established. Matures in 6–8 months.

Growing Instructions

Sow in spring or early summer. Sow 5 mm deep in warm soil or trays. Germinates with bottom heat. Transplant 60–90 cm apart.

Frost-sensitive, it prefers full sun and well-drained soil, thriving in warm climate with regular watering while avoiding waterlogging.
