Tropical shrub cultivated for its fragrant flowers and leaves, dried and ground into a dye used for skin art, hair colouring, and fabric staining. Leaves contain lawsone, a natural pigment that produces a reddish-orange colour. Plants grow as dense, multi-branched shrubs with glossy green leaves and clusters of cream to pink flowers. Prefers hot, sunny conditions and thrives in well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established. Matures in 6–8 months.
Growing Instructions
Sow in spring or early summer. Surface sow seeds and keep moist. Requires light for germination. Germinates with bottom heat. Transplant 60–90 cm apart.
Frost-sensitive, it prefers full sun and well-drained soil, thriving in warm climate with regular watering while avoiding waterlogging.Â
