Lawsonia inermis
Lawsonia inermis, commonly known as Henna, is a striking tropical shrub cultivated for centuries for its richly fragrant flowers and its leaves ā dried and ground into a natural dye used for skin art, hair colouring, and fabric staining. The leaves contain lawsone, a natural pigment that produces the iconic reddish-orange colour synonymous with henna traditions around the world. As a garden plant, it forms a dense, multi-branched shrub with glossy green leaves and beautiful clusters of cream to pink flowers that carry a sweet, heady fragrance.
Native to hot, sunny regions of Africa and Asia, Henna thrives in warm conditions and well-drained soil. In cooler New Zealand climates, it is best grown in containers so it can be overwintered indoors or in a warm, sheltered greenhouse to protect it from frost. In cooler conditions it may drop its leaves over winter ā this is completely normal. With the return of warmth and light in spring, it will reshoot and begin its growth cycle again.
PLANT CARE
⢠Light: Full sun; essential for strong growth and best leaf production
- Water: Water regularly during active growth; allow the top few centimetres to dry slightly between waterings; avoid waterlogging
- Humidity: Low humidity preferred; tolerates dry conditions well
- Considerations: Frost-tender ā overwinter indoors or in a sheltered greenhouse in cooler climates. Best grown in a container for easy overwintering. May drop leaves in winter; this is normal ā it will reshoot with warmth in spring. Plant in well-draining soil, such as our specifically designed blend for aroids and houseplants.
