Indigo Bush is a graceful deciduous shrub native to riverbanks and lowlands of Japan and China, producing arching stems clothed in fine, fernlike compound leaves and elegant spikes of sweet pea-shaped rosy pink flowers from summer through to early autumn. A multifunctional plant with centuries of use in traditional Chinese medicine, it is valued for its ornamental beauty, nitrogen-fixing roots, and edible leaves and flowers. A rewarding and relatively uncommon shrub that adds a delicate, airy quality to borders and naturalized plantings.

Hardy and resilient, Indigo Bush may be cut back to the ground by hard frosts but resprouts freely from the base in spring and flowers reliably through summer. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is notably resistant to honey fungus. A low-maintenance shrub that establishes readily and rewards with a long summer flowering season.
