Jujube
Ziziphus jujuba
A hardy fruit tree reaching 4.5 to 10.5 meters, with thorny branches and small, glossy leaves. In spring it produces clusters of yellow-green flowers, followed by sweet, apple-like fruit in autumn. Enjoyed fresh, dried, or used in cooking, teas, and baking, the fruit is also known as the Chinese Date and is valued for its flavour, nutrition, and long cultural history.
Self-fertile and tolerant of a wide range of soils and climates, Jujube is a resilient and rewarding addition to edible gardens, food forests, and dry landscapes.
Growing Instructions
Carefully crack or nick seeds, then soak in warm water for 48 hours. Cold stratify for 60 days in the fridge. Sow in seed mix and keep moist and warm. Gibberellic acid can assist with breaking dormancy.
🌿 Optional: Use Gibberellic Acid (GA₃) for Seed Germination
Jujube seeds have a tough, impermeable seed coat and often germinate slowly even after stratification. A 500 ppm GA₃ soak for 24–48 hours after scarification can help activate the embryo and improve germination speed and overall success—especially with older or stubborn seed lots.

⚠️ Recommended for experienced growers — germination can be slow and unpredictable, sometimes taking up to 12 months.
