Kūmara Slips – Hawaiian Blue, Gold, Red, and Purple
Grow your own kūmara from slips with this selection of colourful, flavour-rich varieties. Each type is suited to warm, well-drained soils and full sun, with harvest in 120–150 days from planting.
Hawaiian Blue
Pale-skinned with streaky blue-purple flesh that turns vibrant blue when cooked. Firm texture and rich flavour. Space slips 30 cm apart and water moderately.
Gold
Golden skin and flesh with a naturally sweet taste—sweeter than red kūmara. Ideal for roasting, baking, or mashing. Space 30 cm apart, water moderately.
Red
Classic variety with red skin and creamy white flesh. Earthy, mildly sweet flavour. Great for boiling, roasting, or stews. Space 30 cm apart and water regularly.
Purple
Deep purple skin with rich purple flesh and a sweet, nutty taste. Holds colour well when cooked. Best for roasting, mashing, or salads. Space 30 cm apart, water moderately.
Suitable for garden beds or large containers in frost-free areas.
