Lemon Verbena
Aloysia citrodora
A perennial, fragrant herb from South America, also known as Lemon Beebrush or Herb Louisa. Lemon Verbena is grown for its intensely aromatic foliage. The narrow, bright green leaves release a powerful, sweet lemon scent when touched — clean, bright, and intensely citrus without bitterness.
It forms an upright shrub that can reach 1–2 m tall in warm conditions (smaller in containers). In late summer it produces delicate clusters of tiny white to pale lilac flowers. Perfect for herbal teas, desserts, syrups, baking, fruit salads, and infused sugars. The leaves dry exceptionally well and retain much of their fragrance for winter use.
Harvest leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth. In cooler climates it may drop its leaves in winter and reshoot in spring.
PLANT CARE
- Light: Full sun
- Water: Moderate watering; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings
- Soil: Rich, free-draining soil to protect against wet feet
- Considerations: Protect from frost in cooler climates or grow in containers for easy overwintering. Prune in early spring to shape and maintain vigour.
Sold in a 10 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for containers or sunny garden beds.
