Longan (Dimocarpus longan)
A prized subtropical tree producing clusters of small, round fruit with translucent flesh and sweet, musky flavour similar to lychee. The glossy-leaved tree grows 6–12 m tall in the ground but can be maintained smaller in pots.
Prefers warm, sheltered conditions with full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. Protect from frost and strong winds. Water moderately in summer and sparingly in winter to prevent root rot.
Harvest: When fruit turn golden-brown and slightly soft.
Flavour: Sweet, musky, and tropical.
Grown from seed; trees may take several years to bear fruit.
PLANT CARE
• Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid strong direct sun
• Water: Keep mosit during summer but allow soil to dry out between waterings in winter; avoid soggy soil when cold as this can kill the roots.
• Planting: Grow in free-draining soil or large pots in warm, sheltered areas. Self-fertile
• Considerations: Protect from frost; best grown in a container to limit growth and with free-draining soil
Sold in a 10 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for container growing indoors or outdoors in frost-free areas.
