A vigorous annual climber grown for its long gourds, which when fully mature and dried, form natural sponges ideal for bathing, cleaning, or crafts. Harvested young, the fruit can also be eaten like zucchini, with a mild, tender flavour.

Thrives in full sun, fertile soil, and warm conditions. Best grown on a strong trellis or fence to support heavy vines and long fruits. A rewarding dual-purpose crop for both the kitchen and household.

Sow: In spring after frost, 1–2 cm deep, 60 cm apart.
Germination: 7–14 days at 20–25 °C.
Harvest: Pick young for eating or leave to dry fully for sponges.
