Mountain Paw Paw (Papaya)

Vasconcellea pubescens

A subtropical papaya relative that produces bright yellow, deeply segmented fruit about the size of a small apple. Fruit forms on new growth and can be eaten fresh or cooked like a vegetable—ripe fruit contains more vitamins and minerals. Each tree can yield up to 50–60 fruit per season, with harvest from late winter through early summer.

Mountain Paw Paw is semi hardy, fast-growing, and tolerates cooler conditions better than tropical papayas. Older trees can be rejuvenated by cutting back to 60 cm. Mulch well and plant two or more trees to ensure pollination and higher yields.

PLANT CARE

  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Keep moist during fruiting; mulch to retain soil moisture
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity and protection from wind
  • Considerations: Male and female flowers may appear on the same or separate plants, and can vary seasonally. Plant multiple trees to ensure pollination. Flowers are waxy greenish-white and form in leaf axils.

Sold in a 15 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for outdoor planting in mild climates or large containers in colder areas.
