Myoga Ginger (Zingiber mioga) is a shade-loving perennial herb native to Japan, China, and Korea, prized for its edible flower buds and young shoots. The mildly aromatic buds are traditionally used in Japanese cuisine, often sliced thin and served fresh or pickled.
Thrives in partial to full shade with rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. The foliage dies back in winter, but the underground rhizomes typically survive mild frosts. In cooler climates, it’s best grown in containers or planted near the house where it is sheltered from wind and frost.
Harvest the flower buds just before they bloom for the best flavour. Repot every few years to manage clump size and maintain vigour. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
Sold in a 10 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for containers or shaded garden beds.
