Oak Leaf Papaya
Vasconcellea quercifolia
A rare and ornamental papaya species native to South America, valued for its striking, deeply lobed leaves that resemble oak foliage. Unlike tropical papayas, this compact, shrubby plant is grown primarily for its attractive foliage, though it may also produce small, edible fruit in warm conditions.
Oak Leaf Papaya is semi-hardy and more tolerant of cooler climates than common papaya. Ideal for subtropical gardens, collectors, or patio containers in sheltered spots. A distinctive foliage feature for tropical-style gardens or rare plant collections.
PLANT CARE
- Light: Full sun to part shade
- Water: Keep soil moist but free-draining; avoid wet feet
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity
- Considerations: Protect from frost and cold winds; can be container-grown and overwintered in sheltered spaces. Male and female flowers may appear on the same or separate plants, and can vary seasonally. Plant multiple trees to ensure pollination.Â
Sold in a 15 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Best suited for mild climates or protected container cultivation.
