Onion Red Long of Tropea

Onion 'Red Long of Tropea' is a distinctive Italian specialty variety producing tall, elongated red bulbs with a vibrant colour and mild, sweet flavour that has made it one of the most prized and celebrated onions in Mediterranean cooking. Traditionally grown along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy, it is harvested at maturity in mid to late summer and is perfect for fresh use, bunching, and adding to salads, antipasto, and grilled dishes. A vibrant and characterful addition to the home vegetable garden.

Best eaten fresh rather than stored, 'Red Long of Tropea' is a long-day variety that performs well in New Zealand conditions when sown in late winter to early spring for a summer harvest. Its unique elongated shape and rich red colour make it as striking on the plate as it is in the garden.
