Radish - Hailstone
Raphanus sativus
Radish 'Hailstone' is a classic open-pollinated white globe radish introduced in 1903 and widely regarded as one of the best tasting radishes available. It produces smooth, pure white roots slightly larger than most round types, with firm, crisp, mild white flesh that holds its freshness well after harvest. The clean white skin and tender texture make it an outstanding choice for fresh eating, salads, and cruditΓ©s where its mild flavour and satisfying crunch are at their best.
Fast growing and easy to manage, 'Hailstone' performs best in cool weather and is ideal for spring and autumn sowings. Sow successively every 10β14 days for a continuous supply of fresh roots. Harvest when roots reach 2β3 cm across for the mildest flavour and best texture, as roots left in the ground too long can become pithy and lose their crispness.
Planting Season: Spring, Autumn, Winter (in many areas)
Sow: Direct, 1 cm deep
Spacing: Thin to 3β5 cm apart in rows 15 cm apart
Height: 15β20 cm foliage; roots 2β3 cm diameter
Germination: 4β7 days
Harvest: 23β30 days; when roots reach 2β3 cm across
Flavour: Mild, crisp, and fresh; one of the mildest radishes available
