Rocoto - Red Flat
Heat: Hot (40,000 SHU)
110 Days. A hardy Capsicum pubescens from Bolivia and Peru, Rocoto Red Flat produces distinctive flat, pumpkin-shaped red pods around 5 cm across with the characteristic black seeds unique to the pubescens species. The thick, juicy walls carry rich, sweet flavour with assertive heat β quite different in character from habanero-type chillies despite a similar SHU level. A long-lived perennial capable of growing for 10 or more years and reaching up to 5 metres in ideal conditions, producing hundreds of fruit per season.
One of the most cold-tolerant chillies available, Rocoto Red Flat handles cooler climates well and is particularly well suited to New Zealand gardens. Benefits from shelter from strong winds and protection from heavy frost.
Harvest: Pick when pods are fully red for peak sweetness and heat.
Flavour: Very juicy, sweet, and richly flavoured with solid, lasting heat.
