Sea Buckthorn
Hippophae rhamnoides
A resilient deciduous shrub known for its vivid orange berries, packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids. The tart, citrus-like fruit is popular in juices, jams, oils, and skincare. Its silver-green foliage and thorny branches make it a striking and practical choice for hedgerows, shelterbelts, and coastal plantings.
Dioecious—both male and female plants are required for fruit production. Tolerates poor, sandy soils and thrives in exposed, coastal conditions.
Growing Instructions
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours, then cold stratify for 90 day. Sow in moist, well-drained soil at around 20 °C. Gibberellic acid can assist with breaking dormancy.Â
Recommended for experienced growers — germination involves multiple steps and can be slow and unpredictable.
