Melon - Zatta
'Zatta Melon' is an ancient Italian heirloom dating to the 16th century and known in Italy as 'Brutto ma Buono' — ugly but good — a name that perfectly captures its appeal. The deeply ribbed, warty, yellow and green skin is unlike anything else in the garden, but cut it open and the intoxicating musky aroma and intensely sweet, deep orange flesh make it an unforgettable eating experience. Fruits weigh up to 1.5 kg and deliver a richness and fragrance that is widely regarded as among the finest of any melon variety.
Thriving in warm, sunny conditions with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture, 'Zatta' performs best in the warmest regions of New Zealand where long, hot summers allow the fruit sufficient time to ripen fully. Harvest when the skin develops yellow patches and the melon slips easily from the vine for peak flavour and aroma.
